Stage 1 is a full head of hair with no significant recession. This is the juvenile hairline you had growing up, with no visible loss.

Stage 3 is the earliest point of clinically significant hair loss. The temples recede more deeply and symmetrically, creating a distinct M, U, or V shape at the front. This is usually the first stage that prompts real concern.

Stage 4 shows more pronounced frontal and temporal recession along with an enlarging bald area at the crown. A band of hair still runs across the top of the scalp, separating the two thinning zones.
Stage 5 is when those two areas grow larger and the band of hair dividing them becomes narrower and sparser. The front and crown loss are clearly connected in appearance even though a thin bridge remains.
Stage 6 is when that bridging band largely disappears. The frontal and crown balding merge into one continuous bald area across the top of the head.
Stage 7 is the most advanced stage. Only a horseshoe-shaped band of hair remains around the sides and back of the head, and the hair that is left is often finer than before.
The Type A variant
Not everyone follows the standard route, and the scale accounts for that with what is called the Type A variant.
In a Type A pattern, the hairline recedes straight back from front to crown as a single advancing line, rather than the temples and vertex thinning separately and meeting later.
